A few things we all can do to reduce runoff, erosion, pollution…

October 20, 2023

Increase infiltration rates on the uplands:

  • Limit the amount of impermeable surface area (roofs, roads, parking lots…)
  • Improve soil health (cover crops, reduced tillage, increased perennial vegetation…)
  • Keep the soil “alive”

Provide temporary water storage on the uplands:

  • Ponds
  • Rain gardens
  • Smaller culverts and upgraded road structures to temporarily hold water
  • Keep and maintain our wetlands; they can act like sponges and hold a lot of water when needed

Think about where we are building our houses, roads…

  • Do you really need that new house, garage, shed, office… built in the flood plain?
  • How close do you really want to build next to a continuously moving stream bank?
  • What’s going to happen if you build in or at the bottom of natural drainage ways, gullies, ravines?

Reconsider how you treat your soil; do you need to work your ground repeatedly? No-till and cover crops do work in Winona County. We have many farmers doing it profitably throughout the county.
