A few things we all can do to reduce runoff, erosion, pollution…
October 20, 2023
Increase infiltration rates on the uplands:
- Limit the amount of impermeable surface area (roofs, roads, parking lots…)
- Improve soil health (cover crops, reduced tillage, increased perennial vegetation…)
- Keep the soil “alive”
Provide temporary water storage on the uplands:
- Ponds
- Rain gardens
- Smaller culverts and upgraded road structures to temporarily hold water
- Keep and maintain our wetlands; they can act like sponges and hold a lot of water when needed
Think about where we are building our houses, roads…
- Do you really need that new house, garage, shed, office… built in the flood plain?
- How close do you really want to build next to a continuously moving stream bank?
- What’s going to happen if you build in or at the bottom of natural drainage ways, gullies, ravines?
Reconsider how you treat your soil; do you need to work your ground repeatedly? No-till and cover crops do work in Winona County. We have many farmers doing it profitably throughout the county.
