2015 Outstanding Conservationist:

Groth Family Farm

The Groth Family Farm was recently honored as outstanding conservationists at the annual meeting of the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (MASWCD), December 6-8, 2014 in Bloomington, MN. They were selected by the Winona County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) for the award.

“We’re proud of the Groth Family Farm for what they’ve done in conserving the natural resources in Winona County,” said Paul Schollmeier, board chair of the Winona County Soil and Water Conservation District. “It’s great to be able to recognize the work they’ve done locally,” Schollmeier said.

The Groth’s 395 acre farm supports a 135 head dairy herd and cash-crop operation.  The Groth Family Farm is a 5th generation, Century Farm operated by the Groth family since around 1880.  For generations, conservation has been considered a necessity on the farm.  Practices established and utilized include contour strip cropping, grassed waterways, buffer strips, cover-crops and feedlot runoff management through use of roof structures and vegetative buffers.

Using the Conservation Security Program (CSP), the family has incorporated intensive nutrient management with crop tissue sampling, using nitrogen stabilizers, and crop scouting to determine necessity of fertilizer.  The Groth Family Farm is looking into expansion of their small dairy and hopes to incorporate manure storage as part of their nutrient management plan.
